About Plant Heroes

Who we are, what we cover and how Plant Heroes creates practical, trustworthy guides to plants, gardens, soil and the natural world.

Plant Heroes is a collection of stories, videos and podcasts from around Australia, showcasing people who are saving plant species. Some of them you would expect to find working in conservation — others might surprise you.

They are scientists, consultants, government officers, farmers, urban developers and community volunteers. All of them have something in common: they use a unique form of conservation, translocation, to save plants — moving plants, or plant parts, from places where they are threatened to places where they will, hopefully, survive and thrive.

From plant heroes to everyday growers

Those stories taught us something simple: anyone can help living things grow. So we set out to answer the questions people actually ask about plants — in the garden, on the farm, in the kitchen and in the wider environment. Today Plant Heroes publishes 46,865 articles across 286 topics, from improving clay soil and stopping weeds before they spread, to harvesting vegetables at their peak and storing produce so it lasts.
